We will have a small introduction & orientation session. Enjoy some delicious dinner and we hit the sack early as we have a long journey ahead the next day.

DEHRADUN - GANGOTRI (approx 8.5hrs drive, 250kms)

Today we will have an early start. Enjoy a nice hot cup of tea or coffee & we will leave for Gangotri by 0630hrs. We will have breakfast and lunch en route. We expect to reach our hotel in Gangotri by 1630hrs. We will settle down into our rooms. Evening people could go for a small stroll nearby our hotel.

GANGOTRI TO CHIRBASA (approx 10,600ft and 5-6hrs of walking)

This is the day when we set out for our first campsite - Chirbasa. We will have b'fast at 0700hrs and by 0800hrs we set out for our trek to Chirbasa. The name Chirbasa was given as this particular place is surrounded by Chir pine trees and it is the last place on our trek route with such a dense tree cover surrounding it. It’s a gradual walk to our camp site with some small inclines and declines. We expect to reach our campsite by lunch time. Afternoon will be at leisure. Evening we will go for a small acclimatisation hike and on coming back spend some time on the banks of the river next to our campsite. Overnight in tents.

CHIRBASA TO BHOJBASA (approx 11,500ft and 4hrs of walking)

Today we will again post breakfast leave for our next stop, Bhojbasa, by 0800hrs. We will leave the forest cover behind and reach Bhojbasa, which is an open plateau. It can get windy here!! We expect to reach our campsite by lunch time again and afternoon we will spend it at leisure. Evening once again we will go for an acclimatisation hike nearby. If lucky, we could also get to see some rare himalayan birds and Blue Sheep (Himalayan Bharal). Overnight at Bhojbasa in tents.

BHOJBASA (acclimatisation day)

This day is important for acclimatisation before we make our final ascent to Tapovan. We will once again post breakfast go for a hike to Gomukh Glacier - the source of Bhagirathi river. This is again a gradual hike, with a sharp ascent initially and then eases out to regular inclines and declines. We should be back for lunch at our campsite in Bhojbasa. Evening at leisure. Overnight in tents.

BHOJBASA - TAPOVAN (approx 14,400ft and 7-8hrs of walking)

After breakfast, by 0730hrs, we head towards Tapovan. This is going to be a moderate to difficult level walk as we gain considerable height. Up to Gomukh Glacier the walk will be easy as we would have covered it on the previous day. Post gomukh glacier it gets a little tricky as we encounter quite a few boulders on our path and we walk over them. The ascent to Tapovan is also quite steep but at the same time very very scenic. Once you reach Tapovan you are greeted (weather permitted) with some stunning views of Mt.Neelkanth. We will set ourselves in our tents and enjoy the magnificent views all around. Evening will be at leisure as one can go for small walks nearby to capture some stunning landscapes Tapovan has to offer. Overnight at Tapovan in tents.

Today will be a day of relaxation. We will enjoy a nice hot breakfast around 0800hrs and spend the day in the laps of the Himalayas. We could go for a small hike nearby where we could once again get a chance to see the Blue Sheep and some rare flora and fauna as well. We should be back for lunch and spend the remaining part of the day lazing around, playing games or clicking pictures of the various peaks surrounding us.

TAPOVAN - CHIRBASA (approx 10,600ft and 7-8hrs of walking)

We begin our journey back and today we will head out straight for Chirbasa, passing bhojbasa on route. The day will start post breakfast by 0730hrs and we will encounter our first descent which could be a little tricky and then as we reach Gomukh glacier we once again encounter our boulder walk and then as we pass bhojbasa, the route will ease out into a set path with gradual inclines and declines. We expect to reach our campsite at Chirbasa by 1400hrs. Afternoon and evening will be spent at leisure.

We head back today to the hustle and bustle of the small village of Gangotri. We will start our trek post breakfast by 0830hrs and expect to reach Gangotri by 1230hrs. We will proceed to Harsil by sumo and reach our hotel by 1330hrs. Once at our hotel, hot water will be provided and we can finally have our bath!! :) Evening we will have a leisure walk around Harsil and if time permits even go visit a buddhist temple. Overnight at hotel in Harsil.

Gangotri-Gomukh is the origin of the sacred river Ganga. The name draws from a glacier, Gangotri, which flows through a snout like opening called as the Gomukh. This is the prime spot of our trek. If you haven't seen a glacier before, you are in for a treat!

The slow moving ice stretches for over an impressive 30 kms. If you dig deep enough in the hardened snow, the underlying layers of the glacial ice are deliciously edible.

The region is surreal in its beauty surrounded by the spectacular Mt. Shivling and the Bhagirath ranges. Master of the Mountains, Russian Nicholas Roerich had a life-long affair with the Himalayan Mountains. He lived here for years and made breath-taking oil paintings of the region. His oil work of a sadhu meditating at Gangotri is world renowned. The Himalayan Mountains moved and stirred him and if you visit, you would know why as well.

This trek appeals to the religious heart with its offerings of faith. Temples of Shiva, Ganga, Lord Parshuram, and Goddess Kali are strewn on the curving trail. Moving Aartis are performed on the banks of Ganga in the evenings which send one in a deep trance of sound and movement. The diyas look stunning in the receding day-light and the river-water joins in the steady rising hum of the chanting. The river flows gently in this part almost acknowledging the sacred region around. The water is too cold for a dip however; one can stand in the shallow parts and feel the sins get washed away. The serenity and purity of the very air brings calm and peace to the restless mind. Gangotri-Gomukh Trek is moderately difficult; nothing seekers can't achieve to fulfill!

"Beauty of nature is an eternal source that elevates and ennobles the human soul."- Nicholas Roerich.
