Little Rann of Kutch is a salty desert located in the Kutch district of Gujarat. It is also known as the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, as it is the last known refuge for the endangered Indian Wild Ass, which is a member of the horse family. It spans an expanse of 4950 sq kms with arid land and plentiful wildlife. It is elected by the forest department of India to be a biosphere reserve.

The area was declared as a Wildlife sanctuary in 1972, coming under the wildlife protection act. The Rann of Kutch was once an arm of the Arabian Sea. As the land separated from the sea by geological forces, it became a vast, featureless plain encrusted with salt that is inundated with water during the rains. There is a safari across the Little Rann which includes visits to the islands that are now higher grounds covered with grass.

These islands contain a wide variety of wildlife besides the Indian Wild Ass, which the Rann is famous for, including the elegant Blackbuck, Blue Bull (India's largest antelope) and the Indian Gazelle. Little Rann of Kutch also hosts the endangered Indian wolf, desert fox, Indian fox, jackals, desert and jungle cats, and a few hyenas. Hares, gerbils and hedgehogs are also spotted regularly. Reptiles including spiny tailed lizard, monitor, red and common sand boa, saw-scaled viper, Indian rat snake can be seen on the safaris through the desert.

The Little Rann of Kutch has a rich bird diversity & has been declared a Ramsar Site. During the safaris in the Rann, larks, coursers, plovers, chats, warblers, babblers, shrikes can be spotted. The Houbara Bustard and Spotted Sand Grouse use the desert as a wintering area. The best birding site is near the lakes and marshes in and around the Rann where birds are known to gather in large number during the winter months from October to March. Demoiselle and common cranes are commonly spotted. The wetlands also attract Flamingos, Pelicans, Storks, Ibises, Spoonbill, and a variety of ducks and other waterfowl. The Rann of Kutch is one of the few places where Harriers can be seen roosting on open-ground at night.
